Google Search Console is the free tool that shows how your site appears in Google: which queries bring clicks, which pages are indexed, what is broken, and whether Google has any complaints about speed, mobile usability, or security. Before it shows you anything, you have to prove you own the site. This guide covers every way to verify a WordPress site in Search Console in 2026, from the one-click method with Rank Math or Yoast to DNS verification for a whole domain.
Which Property Type Should You Add?
Search Console offers two property types, and the choice matters:
- Domain property (recommended): covers every version of your site at once, http and https, www and non-www, and all subdomains. Verified only through a DNS record at your domain registrar.
- URL prefix property: covers one exact address, for example https://example.com/ only. Verified by HTML tag, HTML file, Google Analytics, or Google Tag Manager. Quicker if you cannot edit DNS.
If you can log in to your domain registrar, add a Domain property. Otherwise add a URL prefix property with your exact site address (check it in WordPress under Settings > General).

Method 1: Verify With an SEO Plugin (Easiest)
This uses the HTML tag method without touching any code. It works for a URL prefix property.
- Go to Google Search Console, sign in, and click Add property. Choose URL prefix, enter your full site address including https://, and click Continue.
- Under Verification methods, open HTML tag. You will see a line like the one below. Copy only the long string of letters and numbers inside
content="...". - In WordPress, paste it into your SEO plugin: Rank Math: Rank Math > General Settings > Webmaster Tools > Google Search Console. Yoast SEO: Yoast SEO > Settings > Site connections > Google. Save.
- Back in Search Console, click Verify.
<meta name="google-site-verification" content="AbC123xyz..." />

If verification fails, clear your cache plugin and CDN cache, view your homepage source, and check that the tag is present in the head section. Leave the tag in place permanently; removing it un-verifies the property.
Method 2: Verify With Site Kit by Google
Google’s own Site Kit plugin verifies Search Console for you during setup: install it, click Sign in with Google, and approve the permissions. It also creates the property if needed and shows Search Console and Analytics reports inside the WordPress dashboard. Use this if you do not have an SEO plugin or want the reports in WordPress.
Method 3: DNS Verification for a Domain Property
This is the only way to verify a Domain property and the most durable method, since it does not depend on a plugin or a file.
- Add a Domain property in Search Console and enter your bare domain (example.com).
- Copy the TXT record Google shows, which starts with
google-site-verification=. - Log in to where your DNS is managed (your registrar such as Namecheap or GoDaddy, or Cloudflare if you use it), open DNS settings, and add a new TXT record with host
@and the copied value. - Wait a few minutes (occasionally up to a day) and click Verify.
Method 4: HTML File Upload
Download the verification file from Search Console and upload it to the root folder of your site (public_html for most hosts) using cPanel File Manager or FileZilla. The file must be reachable at yourdomain.com/googleXXXX.html. Then click Verify. It works, but the plugin and DNS methods are easier and survive a migration better.

Method 5: Google Analytics or Tag Manager
If Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager is already installed on your site with the same Google account, choose that option and click Verify. Nothing else is needed. Analytics requires the gtag.js snippet in the head; Tag Manager requires the container snippet and publish permission on the container.
What to Do After Verifying
- Submit your XML sitemap (Rank Math and Yoast generate one at /sitemap_index.xml).
- Check Pages under Indexing for pages Google could not index and why.
- Review Core Web Vitals and HTTPS reports under Experience.
- Add other users (Settings > Users and permissions) instead of sharing your login.
- Repeat on Bing Webmaster Tools, which can import your Search Console properties in one click.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to verify both www and non-www?
Not with a Domain property; it covers all variants. With URL prefix properties you would need one for each version you want data for, which is why the Domain property is recommended.
Why does Search Console say verification failed?
Most often a caching plugin is serving an old copy of the page without the tag, the tag was pasted with the full meta line instead of just the code, or the site address does not match exactly (http vs https, trailing slash). Clear caches and check the page source.
Can I remove the verification tag after verifying?
No. Google rechecks periodically, and removing the tag, file, or DNS record will eventually revoke access.
Is Google Search Console free?
Yes, completely free, with no limits on the number of sites you can add.
