How to Find High Paying Keywords for Google AdSense (Step by Step)

How to find high paying keywords for Google AdSense

Two AdSense sites can get the same traffic and earn wildly different amounts. The difference is usually the keywords: advertisers pay a few cents per click for some topics and $50 or more for others, and AdSense shares that bid with you. If your posts target low-value keywords, 40 clicks can pay under a dollar. Target the right ones and a single click can pay more than a day of low-value traffic.

This guide shows how to find high paying AdSense keywords that are relevant to your blog and realistic to rank for, using Semrush, Google Keyword Planner, and a few free tools. It was updated in October 2026 for the current tools and for how AdSense now pays.

What Is a High Paying Keyword?

A high paying keyword is a search term advertisers bid a lot for in Google Ads, measured as cost per click (CPC). Since 2024 AdSense pays publishers per impression rather than per click, but the money still comes from those bids: pages about expensive keywords attract expensive ads, and your RPM (revenue per 1,000 views) rises with them. So the goal is unchanged: write about topics where advertisers spend heavily.

The most expensive categories are consistent year after year: insurance, loans and mortgages, lawyers and legal services, business software, web hosting, credit cards, rehab and medical treatment, online degrees, and real estate. The catch is that those head terms are dominated by huge sites. What you want are the long-tail versions in your own niche.

Method 1: Find High CPC Keywords With Semrush

The fastest way is to see which high CPC keywords an established site in your niche already ranks for. Semrush shows this for any domain.

  1. Make a list of five to ten authority blogs in your niche that run AdSense.
  2. Log in to Semrush, open Organic Research, and enter the first domain.
  3. Click the Positions tab to see every keyword the site ranks for.
  4. Sort the table by the CPC column, highest first.
  5. Use the filters to set a minimum volume (100 or more) and a keyword difficulty you can rank for (under 30 for a new blog).
  6. Export the list, then repeat for the other domains.
Semrush organic keywords report

In the example below, a tech blog ranks for long-tail keywords with CPCs over $100. Most of its traffic keywords pay cents; a small set pays dollars, and those are the ones to copy.

High CPC keywords sorted in Semrush

Then open Keyword Magic Tool, type a seed topic, and sort by CPC there too to find keywords nobody in your list has covered yet. The free Semrush account shows 10 results per report; the Pro plan ($139.95 a month) removes the limit, and the 7-day trial is enough to build a keyword list for months of posts.

Method 2: Google Keyword Planner (Free)

Google Keyword Planner is free with a Google Ads account (you do not need to run ads). Go to Tools > Keyword Planner > Discover new keywords, enter your topic, and look at the Top of page bid (high range) column. That number is what advertisers pay for the top ad slot and is the most direct signal of what AdSense will earn. Sort by it, filter to your niche, and ignore anything with a bid under $1.

Its weakness is that search volume shows as ranges (1K to 10K) unless you spend on ads, and it has no difficulty score, so pair it with one of the tools below.

Method 3: Other Tools Worth Using

  • KWFinder (Mangools): shows CPC, volume, and an accurate difficulty score side by side, from $29 a month. Good for finding easy long-tail keywords with high CPC.
  • Ahrefs: Site Explorer > Organic keywords sorted by CPC does the same job as Semrush, with the best backlink data if you also plan link building.
  • Google Search Console: free, and shows which queries already send you traffic. Cross-check them in Keyword Planner; you may already rank for high CPC terms you can strengthen.
  • Google Trends: check that a high CPC keyword is not a dying topic before writing about it.

Turning Keywords Into Earnings

A keyword list earns nothing on its own. For each keyword you choose:

  • Write the most useful page on the topic, not a thin page built around the keyword. Google’s helpful content systems demote pages that exist only to serve ads.
  • Follow keyword research and on-page SEO basics: keyword in the title, URL, first paragraph, and a few headings.
  • Place ads where they are seen (in-content and above the fold) and let AdSense Auto ads optimize the rest.
  • Give it time. New pages take three to six months to settle in the rankings; track them with a rank checker.
  • Block low-paying ad categories in AdSense so cheap ads do not fill slots on expensive pages. See how to block low paying ads.

Finally, remember that high CPC pages are also the best candidates for affiliate links. Many bloggers find that a page about web hosting or software earns several times more from one affiliate sale than from a month of AdSense impressions, so it is worth testing both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the highest paying AdSense niches?

Insurance, legal, finance (loans, credit cards, trading), business software and SaaS, web hosting, health treatment, education, and real estate. Within those, long-tail keywords with buying intent pay best.

Does AdSense still pay per click?

Since 2024 AdSense pays per impression, matching how the rest of the display ad industry works. Advertiser bids still determine the rate, so high CPC topics still earn higher RPMs.

Can I find high CPC keywords for free?

Yes. Google Keyword Planner shows top of page bids for free, and the free Semrush account shows the top 10 keywords by CPC for any domain. Paid tools mainly add volume, difficulty scores, and unlimited results.

Why is my CPC low even with high paying keywords?

Usually because traffic comes from countries with low ad rates, the page has too many ads (lowering viewability), or the ads shown are not matched to the topic. Check the AdSense country report and your blocked categories.

Hey Istiak, thanks for sharing. I would like too know how I can increase my search traffic for my site. Most of the high paying keywords are very competitive, even the none-paying keywords are too. So how can I stand out and increase my search traffic please? Thank you
