A new blog cannot get search traffic until Google indexes it. Google usually finds new sites on its own, but that can take days or weeks. The good news: a few simple steps can get your blog indexed much faster, often within a day or two.
No one can guarantee indexing in 24 hours, since Google decides. But the steps below give you the best chance.
First, Check if Your Blog Is Already Indexed
Go to Google and search for site:yourdomain.com. If you see your pages, Google has already indexed them. If you see no results, follow the steps below. For a more accurate answer, use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console (step 2).
What Are Crawling and Indexing?
- Crawling: Googlebot, Google’s software, visits pages by following links and sitemaps.
- Indexing: Google processes what it found and stores the page in its index, so it can appear in search results.
So the faster Googlebot finds a link to your site, and the more it trusts your pages, the faster you get indexed.
1. Make Sure Search Engines Are Not Blocked
Go to Settings > Reading in WordPress and make sure Discourage search engines from indexing this site is unchecked. This box is sometimes left on after a site is built, and it tells Google to stay away.
2. Add Your Site to Google Search Console
Google Search Console is a free tool that shows how Google sees your site. Add and verify your site first. Here is how to verify your WordPress site in Search Console.
3. Submit Your XML Sitemap
A sitemap lists all your pages so Google can find them. SEO plugins like Rank Math and Yoast create one automatically. Submit it under Sitemaps in Search Console. Follow how to submit your sitemap to Google.
4. Request Indexing With the URL Inspection Tool
This is the fastest way to ask Google to crawl a specific page:
- Open Search Console and paste your page URL into the search bar at the top.
- Wait for the result. If it says URL is not on Google, click Request Indexing.
- Repeat for your homepage and your most important posts.
There is a daily limit, so use it for key pages, not every post. The old Submit URL tool no longer exists, so this is the replacement.
5. Submit to Bing and Use IndexNow
Bing also powers other search engines and AI tools. Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap to Bing. Then install the free IndexNow plugin (Rank Math also has it built in). It notifies Bing and other IndexNow search engines instantly when you publish or update a post.
6. Link to Your New Posts From Existing Pages
Googlebot follows links. Link to your new post from your homepage, a popular older post, or your menu. Internal links help Google find and value new content much faster.
7. Get Links From Other Sites
If another site Google already visits often links to you, Googlebot will find you quickly. Good ways to get early links:
- Add your blog URL to your social profiles (X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube) and share your posts.
- Write a guest post for a blog in your niche.
- Leave thoughtful comments on related blogs. See why blog comments do not get approved.
- Answer questions on forums and Q&A sites where links are allowed.
8. Publish Quality Content Regularly
Google crawls active, useful sites more often. Thin or copied content may be crawled but not indexed. Write original posts that answer real questions, and publish on a regular schedule.
Finally, set up Google Analytics so you can see when search traffic starts arriving.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take Google to index a new blog?
It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. Submitting a sitemap and requesting indexing in Search Console usually speeds it up to a day or two.
Why is my page crawled but not indexed?
Google found the page but decided not to index it yet. Common reasons are thin content, duplicate content, or few internal links. Improve the page and link to it from other posts.
Does pinging still help with indexing?
WordPress still pings update services when you publish, but it has little effect on Google. IndexNow is the modern way to notify Bing and similar search engines.
Do I need to submit every new post to Google?
No. Once your sitemap is submitted, Google finds new posts automatically. Use Request Indexing only for important or urgent pages.
