How to Use cPanel File Manager for WordPress

cPanel File Manager

Most of the time you manage WordPress from the dashboard. But sometimes you need to reach your site’s files directly, for example when a bad plugin or theme locks you out with an error, or when you need to upload or edit a file like .htaccess. cPanel File Manager lets you do this in your browser, with no extra software.

What You Can Do With File Manager

  • Upload, download, move, and delete files.
  • Edit files like wp-config.php or .htaccess.
  • Rename a plugin folder to disable a broken plugin.
  • Create and extract zip files.
  • Change file permissions.

How to Open File Manager

  1. Log in to your hosting account. Most hosts have a button to open cPanel, or you can try yourdomain.com/cpanel.
  2. Find the Files section and click File Manager.
  3. In the left panel, click public_html. This is where WordPress is usually installed.
  4. To see hidden files like .htaccess, click Settings (top right) and check Show Hidden Files (dotfiles).

Some hosts use their own control panel instead of cPanel, but most offer a similar File Manager tool.

How to Fix a Site Broken by a Plugin

  1. Open File Manager and go to public_html/wp-content/plugins.
  2. Right-click the folder of the plugin that caused the problem and choose Rename.
  3. Add -off to the name (for example, plugin-name-off) and save.
  4. Reload your site. WordPress disables the plugin because it can no longer find it.
  5. Log in to your dashboard and delete or replace the plugin.

The same trick works for themes in wp-content/themes. WordPress will switch to a default theme if one is installed.

How to Upload a File

  1. Open the folder where the file should go.
  2. Click Upload in the top toolbar.
  3. Drag the file in or click Select File.
  4. Go back to File Manager. Use Extract if you uploaded a zip file.

How to Edit a File

Right-click the file and choose Edit. Make your change and click Save Changes. Always download a copy of the file first (right-click > Download), so you can restore it if something goes wrong.

File Manager vs FTP

File Manager is quick for small jobs. For uploading many files or large folders, an FTP client is faster. See how to use FTP (FileZilla) with WordPress. For editing .htaccess, read how to find, edit, or create the .htaccess file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are WordPress files in cPanel?

Usually in the public_html folder. If WordPress is installed in a subfolder, look inside that folder.

Why can I not see .htaccess in File Manager?

It is a hidden file. Click Settings and check Show Hidden Files (dotfiles).

Is it safe to delete files in File Manager?

Only if you know what they do. Deleted files cannot be recovered without a backup, so back up first.

Can I disable a plugin without logging in to WordPress?

Yes. Rename the plugin’s folder in wp-content/plugins using File Manager.
