Deciding what to blog about can be hard if you want to start a blog for making money only. A lot of factors will come to your mind. Will it attract readers? Will it be profitable? Will it stand out? Etc.
That’s totally fine. You should have an idea of what’s going to happen. But the problem is, those factors sometimes make the decision taking harder. It shouldn’t be like this. It can be easier.
When I started my first blog, I had no idea where I was heading to. All I knew is that I was sharing my knowledge with others and I would be able to monetize my blog with AdSense.
But things have changed a lot. Now you need to be more specific on your blog topic. To make things easier, I am going to share a few things you should consider while deciding what to blog about. I’ll also share some blog topic ideas as well.
3 Things To Consider While Choosing A Blog Niche
Before deciding what to blog about, you need to consider three things. If you can come up an idea with the composition of these three things you are good to go.
Now let’s dive into the details of these things.
1. Passion
The very first question you need to ask yourself is, what am I passionate about?
If you have the answer, you are good to go. But it’s not as easy as it seems.
At first, you need to understand what passion is. A passion is something that you love doing even if you are not getting paid. It could be anything like painting, gardening, finding discounts, collecting something, reading about something, creating or building something, etc.
Here are five questions for you to find your passion.
- Do you have a hobby you love doing?
- What’s the topic you like to discuss with others?
- What’s the thing you enjoy reading?
- What types of things have you been searching on Google? [You can see here]
- What pages are you following on Facebook, Twitter, and other social sites?
Once you can come up with a topic that you are passionate about, you need to make sure that you have proper knowledge on the topic. Though knowledge can be developed over the time, you need to have a basic understanding of the subject.
Now it’s time to research the profitability of the topic.
2. Profitability
Being passionate about something is a great thing. But if you can’t monetize your passion, you won’t be able to go long with your passion. It’s true for blogging too.
A lot of passionate bloggers stopped blogging because of making no money. At the same time, a lot of bloggers failed because of start blogging only for making money.
So you need to have a right balance between your passion and making money out of it.
You can’t be 100% sure if your blog is going to be successful or not. All you can do is, try to understand if your blog topic is profitable or not.
There are few things you can do to understand the profitability of your niche.
- Research on other bloggers on the same niche and check if they are making money.
- Check the availability of affiliate programs and CPA offers for the niche.
- Check if your blog topic is good enough to attract the advertisers.
- Check if you can offer consultancy on your blog.
- Check if you can offer some services on your blog.
It’s not like your niche has to compatible with all these points. If one or two points are compatible, you are good to go.
For example, most of my income here at RoadToBlogging comes from affiliate marketing. So having available affiliate programs is enough for me to monetize my blog.
3. Potential Audience
The next thing is the market size.
If the market is too small or too big, it will be tough for you to reach the potential audience.
So how to understand if your niche is too small?
The answer is, if you cannot come up with 10 blog posts ideas for your niche, it means your niche is too small. At the same time, you need to check the number of people who are interested in your niche. If there are available competitors in the market, it’s a good sign that people care about it. You can also use keyword research tools like SEMrush to check how many people are searching for the keywords which are related to your niche.
And what about the “too big” niche?
If your competitors are big publications like TechCrunch, PCMag, WireCutter, etc; then it means your niche is too big. It will be tough for you to compete with these prominent publications.
However, the too big niche is not a problem if you can come up with your own angle. For example, if you’re living a country where there is no popular technology blog, you can try to build a TechCrunch for your own country.
Another thing you can do is, start with a subtopic and go big later. For example, if you want to start a blog on ‘Photography’, you can start with ‘Mobile Photography’ topic initially. However, if you have a big plan, you need to choose your domain name wisely so that you can cover all the topics in future.
