How to Speed Up and Secure WordPress With Cloudflare (Free CDN)

Speed up WordPress with Cloudflare

A faster site keeps readers around and helps your Core Web Vitals. A CDN (content delivery network) is one of the easiest speed upgrades, and Cloudflare offers a very capable free plan that also adds security, free SSL, and protection against bad bots.

What Is a CDN and How Does Cloudflare Help?

Normally every visitor loads your site from your hosting server, which might be on another continent. A CDN stores copies of your files on servers around the world and serves each visitor from the nearest one, so pages load faster. Cloudflare also sits in front of your site as a security shield, filtering attacks and spam bots before they reach your host.

What the Free Plan Includes

  • Global CDN for images, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Free SSL certificate (HTTPS)
  • DDoS protection and basic firewall rules
  • Bot protection features
  • Fast DNS
  • Analytics on traffic and threats

How to Set Up Cloudflare on WordPress

Many hosts offer one-click Cloudflare in their dashboard. If yours does, that is the easiest option. Otherwise, follow these steps (do it at a quiet time of day):

  1. Sign up at cloudflare.com and click Add a domain.
  2. Enter your domain and choose the Free plan.
  3. Cloudflare scans your DNS records. Check that your main records (usually A records for @ and www, plus mail records) are listed. Records for your website should show an orange cloud (Proxied).
  4. Cloudflare gives you two nameservers. Log in to your domain registrar and replace your current nameservers with Cloudflare’s.
  5. Wait for Cloudflare to confirm your domain is active. This usually takes minutes, occasionally up to 24 hours.

Recommended Settings After Setup

  • SSL/TLS: set the encryption mode to Full (strict) if your host has an SSL certificate (most do). Avoid Flexible, which can cause redirect loops.
  • Always Use HTTPS: turn it on under SSL/TLS > Edge Certificates.
  • Brotli compression and HTTP/3: usually on by default; leave them on.
  • Bot protection: enable Bot Fight Mode under Security to block simple bots.
  • Cloudflare WordPress plugin: install the official Cloudflare plugin to apply recommended settings and clear Cloudflare’s cache from your dashboard.
  • Automatic Platform Optimization (APO): a paid add-on (included in higher plans) that caches whole WordPress pages at the edge for much faster loading worldwide.

Tips to Avoid Problems

  • Keep your hosting caching plugin; Cloudflare works alongside it. Just avoid enabling the same minification in two places.
  • If something looks broken after a change, use Caching > Purge Everything in Cloudflare and clear your WordPress cache.
  • Switching hosts later? Update the A record in Cloudflare to the new server IP; you do not need to change nameservers again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cloudflare really free?

Yes. The Free plan includes the CDN, SSL, DDoS protection, and DNS. Paid plans and add-ons like APO add more features.

Will Cloudflare make my site faster?

Usually yes, especially for visitors far from your server. The biggest gains come with page caching such as APO or your host’s caching.

Can Cloudflare break my site?

Rarely. Most issues come from the wrong SSL mode (use Full strict) or caching conflicts, which purging the cache usually fixes.

    Hey Istiak,

I’m hosting my blog on shared hosting which is useful for newbie bloggers. After connecting my site with CloudFlare, site loading speeds up. CloudFlare saves some amount of bandwidth from unwanted bot traffic. Each and every site should need CDN because it helps your website performances better than a competitor.

    Thanks

I never faced this problem before. So I can’t say you the exact solution. So it’s better to contact with your Host Provider.

After my experience with CloudFlare i recommend every blogger or site owner use this service. I recently received a warning from Google about my site’s page speed saying “Serve resources from a consistent URL
We have analyzed some of the pages on your sites that serve the most ads, and have detected Page Speed problems that create a highly negative user experience for some users. Frequently viewed pages on your sites are serving the same resource from multiple URLs, wasting client bandwidth and resources.”

So when I analyzed the warning above it was obvious page speed problem was the main issue, so I figured if I can improve my page speed then the problem will be solved. Then i implemented CloudFlare and since then i have experienced a faster page load speed, improved ranking and my visitors tend to spend more time on my blog now as my daily pageviews is a great indication to this.

Hey Nwosu, Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It’s true that Google considers site speed on ranking. I’ve been using CloudFlare CDN for few weeks. And I must say CloudFlare is the best free CDN service. It works great for me.
